Summer Black&Red Raspberries 2017. Black Raspberries are usually only available for a two week period at the end of June into the beginning of July. They are also limited to the first couple of customers on the days being offered for picking. Note that the Black Raspberries are different than Blackberries. Our Blackberries are on thornless canes and available to pick late July.
Black and Red Raspberries are both difficult crops for Pick your Own- it is a bramble crop with pickers and the fruit is very delicate. Not ideal for young children.
Pick the darkest colored raspberries (whether it is dark black for the black raspberries or dark red for the red raspberries). The darker the color, the sweeter the berry. The ripest raspberries should come off the cane easily. If you have to pull at a raspberry, it probably isn't ripe yet. Look underneath of the leaves. Many people just look at the tops of the canes, and leave many beautiful raspberries near the ground. In the black raspberry field the red fruit is not ripe!
We suggest picking in the morning after the dew has dried but before high heat of the day. As a Low/No spray crop the fruit is delicate and prone to rapid decay if left wet or damaged in heat. The best preservative is to keep the fruit cold!! Refrigerate ASAP after picking.
